NETS Australia: Contacting Cratemakers
A checklist with considerations and possible inclusions to help with contacting crate manufacturers to provide quotes for your touring exhibitions or travelling artworks. Templates for communicating with a cratemaker are included at the end of this National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Australia resource.
Crating is an excellent way to protect artworks and objects during transit and storage from moisture, pests, dust, and vibration/shock. However, not all artworks or objects will require crating, as it can be an expensive and resource-heavy exercise. It is wise to consider where alternative means of protection can be used or how crates can be designed with reuse in mind.
This information and worksheet includes an illustrated guide to various crating styles and considerations such as sizing to quote, internal supports, wrapping, crate materials, openings and any additional exterior requirements (handles, pallet capable, castors etc).
