Nicholas Harding ‘From the Wings’

Step into the dynamic world of Sydney’s theatre scene with From the Wings, a theatre drawing exhibition from Nicholas Harding’s private collection.

Initially scheduled for a regional tour in 2020, this captivating showcase was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This period was further extended by unforeseen circumstances surrounding Nicholas Harding’s passing. After spending time cataloguing Harding’s studio, this theatre drawing exhibition is now ready to showcase the intimate world of theatre captured by Nicholas Harding’s skilled hand.

Drawing inspiration from thousands of sketches and dozens of sketchbooks, Harding offered a unique perspective on the actors, directors, and creatives of the Sydney Theatre Company. Granted exclusive access to the rehearsal room, Harding captured the essence of productions such as ‘Waiting for Godot’, ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’, ‘The Present’, and ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’. Through lively portraits and intimate sketches, he brought to life iconic figures such as Hugo Weaving, Richard Roxburgh, and Philip Quast, both in and out of character.

Experience Harding’s original sketchbooks displayed alongside a series of large ink on paper drawings. Harding’s limited edition curated art book, ‘From the Wings’, showcases his unparalleled talent for capturing the energy and spirit of live performance. Don’t miss this opportunity to delve into the world of theatre through the eyes of a master artist.
