Murray Fredericks | The salt lake

The Museum of Australian Photography is currently seeking expressions of interest for our new travelling exhibition, Murray Fredericks | The salt lake. Murray Fredericks | The salt lake is a major survey exhibition that brings together Salt, Array, Vanity and the artist’s most recent series, Blaze. Murray Fredericks (b. 1970) is an internationally acclaimed, award–winning artist and film maker that challenges the traditions of landscape photography. His works traverse time and place, utilising weather, reflection, perspective, light and darkness to transcend the literal matter of the subject itself. In 2003 Murray Fredericks first visited Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre, one of the world’s largest salt lakes. Driven by the boundless potential of abstract space, Fredericks has returned 31 times over the past two decades, exploring perceptual states of being. His series, or ‘cycles’ as he calls them, have resulted in interventions with mirrors, and more recently fire, refracting infinity and the void through the lens of contemplative minimalism. The salt lake is divided into two parts. The first exhibits the artist’s internationally renowned Salt works. These works convey a personal approach to the landscape and the emotional and metaphysical qualities associated with Fredericks’s artistic journey spent confronted with infinity. The second part contains formative works predominantly taken in the early 2000s, during which time Fredericks’s interest in Eastern philosophy developed alongside his research into minimalism and post-minimalism. This exhibition is accompanied by the artist’s award-winning Salt documentary and his latest time lapse Three Emus.
